Liverpool 3-1 Borussia M’Gladbach
European Cup Final
25th May 1977

This proved to be a thrilling European Cup final and after just 28 minutes, Liverpool took the lead when Steve Heighway split the Borussia defence with a perfectly weighted pass for Terry McDermott to sweep the ball into the net. Although the stunned Germans hit back with a 25 yard rocket from Bonhof against the cross bar, Liverpool played out the half with patient, measured football. At the start of the second half, Borussia were provided with an unexpected life line, Jimmy Case intercepted a German attack only to push the ball into the path of Alan Simonsen, and the great Dane bent a stunning shot wide of Ray Clemence in goal. Shortly after, breaking out of defence, Liverpool forced a corner after 65 minutes. Steve Heighway took it and Tommy Smith capped his final big match in a Liverpool jersey by rocketing home a super header from ten yards out. With ten minutes remaining, Keegan broke into the penalty box and was tripped by the exasperated Berti Vogts for a penalty. Phil Neal made it 3-1 and the finest victory in Liverpool’s football history was in the bag.
