Graeme Souness

In 1977, Liverpool spent a record £350,000 in Souness who, with 3 full international caps to his name, was one of the most successful football players around the globe. Souness’s passing ability, moves, defending; aggression and leadership qualities became vital elements of Liverpool’s domination of the English and European football. His leadership attributes persuaded Italian club, Sampdoria to spend £650,000 for his services in 1984. In 1986 he was selected player manager of Glasgow Rangers.

Kenny Dalglish

Many thought that Dalglish lacked pace, however his speed was certainly compensated with his mind that was one step ahead of everyone else on the field. During his eight seasons spent at Celtic, they never finished outside the top three of the Scottish league. Dalglish played in eleven domestic cup finals in six years, scoring in four of the finals. Liverpool bought Dalglish for £440,000 in 1977. Dalglish fitted into the Liverpool side immediately, dazzling the city with his subtle touches and moves around the opponent’s territory. Kenny Dalglish was the first player to score a century of goals for a Scottish league club. He scored his 100th goal for Liverpool with a fantastic effort against Ipswich. In 1985, Dalglish was selected player manager. Dalglish won the league seven times with Liverpool.

Ian Rush

Rush switched to Liverpool in 1980 for a sum of £300,000 and less than one month later he made his first appearance for Wales. Within a year, he had grown up from a skinny teenager into a predatory genius and won the first of a full cupboard of trophies in 1981, winning the league cup. Rush reserved some of his finest displays for Merseyside rivals Everton, the club he had supported as a child. During the 1986-87 season against Everton, double chasing Liverpool fell behind to an early goal, however Rush pounced on a mistake in defense to score a dramatic equalizer. Liverpool took the lead soon after and, ten minutes from time, Rush rifled home a near range shot to record Liverpool’s first FA Cup triumph in twelve years.
