The Reds were up against first division outfit, Bolton and this encounter proved to be far from easy for the reds. Liverpool dominated the early moments of the tie as Jamie Redknapp came very close to putting Liverpool in to the lead in the first ten minutes. Liverpool actually went ahead from a fine strike by Steve McManaman. The second half was more interesting as Steve McManaman scored his second, Liverpool were 2-0 ahead, however Alan Thompson snatched a goal back for Bolton and the tie went in to a nail biting finale as Liverpool hung on to a 2-1 victory.
