Liverpool got off to a fantastic start as John Arne Riise scored after just one minute of play. However after fierce pressure, Chelsea leveled through an unfortunate Steven Gerrard own goal. Chelsea came agonizingly near to winning during the 90 minutes as Didier Drogba squandered an opportunity late on in the 90 minutes. During extra time, Didier Drogba scored from point blank range and Kezman scored to make it 3-1. With only minutes of the extra period remaining, Antonio Nunez scored what proved to be a consolation goal for the Reds. Chelsea became the deserved champions of the 2005 league Cup final.
Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan

the champions league final was a thriller between AC Milan and Liverpool. It only took AC Milan under just one minute of play to take the lead as their veteran defender; Paolo Maldini scored the opener. With five minutes left on the clock, Hernan Crespo scored two goals in the space of two minutes as AC Milan were now leading 3-0 and victory was looking certainty. How incorrect they were proved to be, Gerrard motivated the come back ten minutes into the second half with a twenty five yard strike. Two minutes later Liverpool were right back in the match as Vladimir Smicer scored as the reds were now only a single goal behind. On the 60 minute mark, the comeback was complete as Xabi Alonso leveled for the Reds and with the score line all square, the game was now anybody’s. Both teams created chances to win the encounter; however with Dudek in great form in goal for Liverpool they were beginning to look safe. Extra time was fascinating; it was arguably Jerzy Dudek’s most memorable period in goal during his career at Liverpool. He made an amazing double save to stop Andriy Shevchenko from scoring a certain goal. The match was forced into a penalty shoot out; Dudek continued his outstanding display by saving two of Milan’s penalties and Liverpool were the winners of the Champions League.
FA Cup Match: Liverpool 3-3 West Ham (FA Cup Final)

This was without doubt, one of the greatest FA Cup final matches in the history of the tournament. The match began at a very high tempo and mid way through the first half, Jamie Carragher tried to clear the ball out of the Liverpool penalty area however he smashed the ball past the Liverpool goal keeper and West ham were 1-0 in front. Only four minutes later, West Ham’s forward, Dean Ashton smashed West Ham into a 2-0 lead. Few minutes later, Peter Crouch headed the ball into the back of the West Ham net, however the goal was disallowed as it was proven to be offside. A curling free kick from Gerrard minutes later was met by Riise and he volleyed the ball into the goal and Liverpool had pulled a vital goal back. Ten minutes into the second half, Liverpool equalized as Crouch knocked the ball down for Gerrard to volley past Shaka Hislop. Mid way through the second half, a thundering 35 yard strike by West Ham midfielder, Paul Konchesky, fired West Ham back in to the lead. West Ham now had the edge and Liverpool went in search for the equalizer. Morientes and Gerrard both had opportunities missed and saved. However during injury time, Gerrard struck the ball home from 35 yards out to equalize and now the cup was up for grabs. The match went into extra time and Marlon Harewood nearly headed a late winner for the Hammers. However with the score line ending 3-3, the match was decided on the penalty shoot out. Reina proved to be the hero as he saved 3 of West ham’s penalties and Liverpool were the champions of the 2006 FA Cup final. |
